2013 “SEXY EVIL GENIUS”

2013 “Sexy Evil Genius” is a dark comedy/drama directed by Shawn Piller, written by Scott Lew, and starring Katee Sackhoff, Seth Green, Michelle Trachtenberg, Harold Perrineau, William Baldwin and Anthony Michael Hall. It’s available on DVD from a variety of sources and run 90 minutes.

“Sexy Evil Genius” is about an eclectic group of strangers (Green, Trachtenberg and Perrineau) invited to a downtown bar by a mutual ex-lover, Nikki Franklyn (Sackhoff), a maddeningly sexy, unpredictable and possibly insane young woman who’s recently gotten out of prison for murdering her last ex-boyfriend (Hall). The party really gets started when Nikki herself arrives, hauling her latest lover and fiancée (Baldwin), the morally challenged lawyer who’d been handling her case. She’s mysterious about her intentions and her current and former lovers soon realize they are all caught in one of her brilliant, mischievous mind-games with possible deadly consequences. By the night’s end, revenge will be had, new romance will bloom, and Nikki will have delivered on her reputation as the sexy evil genius.

The direction, editing, writing and acting are superior and believable. As the character Zachary Newman, Nikki’s first lover from high school, relates, he had always called her a sexy evil genius, and when you finally see the ending (which will surprise you as much as the characters were surprised), you’ll appreciate the nom de plume. IMDB gives a rating of 5.7, but Vaultimes gives it a rating of at least 8.5.

What make “Sexy Evil Genius” a rather special movie is its author, Scott Lew. Scott Lew is a screenwriter afflicted with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) who, though nearly full-paralyzed, continues to follow his passion for writing feature films. He uses a large flat screen monitor that follows his eye movements by laser to select any letters, numbers and many other characters to create stories that are transcribed onto paper. He refers to his approach on writing as “jujitsu-ing reality”, by grabbing ahold of the character and reader and throwing them in a direction they didn’t see coming, and that exactly how he accomplishes “Sexy Evil Genius”. Scott maintains his voice in the world through his scripts, giving added meaning to the expression of “living to write”.   His passion and love of life makes him a serious role model for all of us.
